My small graphite drawings emerge layer by layer from my subconscious. Although design control is evident, decisions are a spontaneous response to the developing imagery and are not preconceived. After hours, days, weeks of research concepts blend, reconfigure, become symbolic and often surprise me.
Ambivalent by nature, I usually see both utopian and dystopian possibilities. But listening to Aubrey de Grey in Toronto, then returning home to care for my aged father as he deteriorated and died, created a singular positive response to offered dreams of extended longevity.
This very small (paper size is 10" x 10") drawing formed the conceptual base for the large tapestry, Homage to Aubrey, I am currently weaving. As it developed I knew I had permitted the evolution of my thoughts about Aubrey de Grey and SENS, about the personal and societal ramifications of longevity to form a voice.
