Dear Fellow Members,
I work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where, among other activities,
research is conducted in simulating artificial societies. Recently, a
large-scale supercomputer study was released simulating the effects of a
terror strike in virtual cities in the United States. See here.
Along these lines, I have recently published a science fiction book to
popularize the research ideas I am starting to work on in earnest ( ISBN:
1419609440 ). Namely, I am interested in socio-economic conflict and
conflict resolution in the relatively near term post-Darwinian,
post-corporeal future. The book, Beyond Future Shock received a glowing
review from a New York Times best selling author. It is available at
Amazon.com. See here.
The “Buy Now” button is missing (this will be fixed in a few days) BUT the
“1 used & new” link works.
I encourage you to read the online reviews and would welcome feedback from
fellow members.
With warm regards,
Alex

The word “transhumanism” often conjures up comic book like imagery because the word itself is the combination of “trans”, meaning to move from one place to the next, and “humanism”, which refers to a system of thought that centers on humans and their values, capacities, and worth. Using simple Fukayamian addition methods, one could conclude the word “transhumanism” literally means the desire to leave the centers for human values, capacities, and worth and move to a completely different one created by a small group of deranged white coats who furiously twist their long handlebar moustaches while hatching their master plan. Word games and comic books, however, are not enough to encapsulate what transhumanism is all about, so let’s try and forget what we have seen in the Terminator, the Matrix, and the X-Men for just a few moments. Let’s rather ask ourselves the question “Can technology be ethically and rationally used to permanently improve the human condition?”

Monday, February 14, 2005One of my hypotheses right now is that emotions often seem irrational to us simply because many of them are outdated to work with modern situations, culture, and technologically-enabled existence. The solution is to develop neo-emotions. A neo-emotional system would take whatever beneficial roles existing emotional systems provide, and extend and modify these roles to better suit the environment.

Friday, December 31, 2004Generally, the primary purpose of transhumanism is to increase the efficiency of human functioning by modifying the human genome of zygotes, which I assume means eliminating the countless rare, common, and omnipresent genetic flaws, not excluding age-induced degeneration, and to increase human desirability, ability, versatility, and resilience. Other technologies that serve a similar purpose are also considered.

Tuesday, October 12, 2004Posted by Michael Vassar - While formerly intellectual strength was a gift given by god for the benefit of fellow man, after Darwin (and Nietzsche) it was increasingly seen as a badge granting privilege as one of the true in-group of real and worthy men. As a result, less effort went into doing what one could by developing ideas to improve life, and more into trying to demonstrate one’s mental superiority.
