The World Transhumanist Association of Southwest North America (wta-sowenoam) is a chapter of the World Transhumanist Association. Geographically, WTA-SOWENOAM comprises at this time an area with somewhat fuzzy boundaries that includes western Texas, New Mexico, northern Mexico, Arizona and neighboring states. Emerging technologies raise profound scientific, technical, social, and ethical issues. The WTA was founded in 1998 to support discussion, research, and public awareness of cutting-edge transhumanist thinking. Both present technologies, such as genetic engineering, information technology, and pharmaceuticals, as well as anticipated future capabilities, such as nanotechnology, machine intelligence, uploading, "paradise-engineering", and space colonization, are part of the transhumanist ambit. Risks as well as benefits are explored, with the ultimate aim of developing workable strategies and policies to enable societies and individuals to navigate the waters ahead. The stakes could hardly be higher. Plausible scenarios range from the extinction of intelligent life to a posthuman future that could be very wonderful and happy indeed. You are welcome to join the growing number of scholars and interested citizens who are taking part in serious discussions about the future of humanity!
