JBS Haldane Award for Best Undergraduate Transhumanist Paper

Deadline: May 1

When submitting your papers please indicate if you are a student enrolled at a high school, college or university, and will not have not received your baccalaureate degree by January 1, 2003, and we will submit your paper to the Haldane award committee.  The Haldane award will be given to the student paper that best advances transhumanist thought, analysis or applications. Previously published papers are eligible. 

Please submit your complete paper to james.hughes@trincoll.edu by May 1, 2003.  The winner will be contacted by May 1, 2003. The award ceremony will be held the evening of Saturday, June 28,  2003 during the Transvision 2003 USA conference.   To be eligible for the award authors must be members in good standing of the World Transhumanist Association, but do not have to attend the Transvision conference. The awardee will receive $250, and the paper will be considered for inclusion in the special transhumanism issue of the Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics

Description of the content and format (300 words or less)

Abstract (25-50 words) for inclusion in the conference program

Media to be used and audiovisual equipment needed (if any).

Designated contact person (only one per proposal)

Complete name, title, organization, address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address for each session presenter

Brief biographical sketch (50-100 words) of each presenter

After notification of acceptance of your paper, all presenters (at least one per presentation) will be required to pre-register for the conference. Presenters not registered by April 1, 2003 will not be included in the program.

Proposal Selection Criteria

Proposals will be selected based on the following criteria

A clear and concise description of the proposed presentation

Relevance to conference goals and objectives

Evidence of presenter experience with topic 

Completion of all information requested 

 

Timeline

Proposals due by: February 1, 2003
Notification of acceptance: March 1, 2003

Deadline for conferees to pre-register: April 1, 2003

 

Publication of Proceedings

If your presentation is accepted, you are strongly encouraged to submit it as an electronic text by June 1, 2003. Electronic contributions will be considered for one of the following publication venues:

Seven-ten papers will appear in a special issue of the Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics.

Other academic papers will be considered for publication in the Journal of Evolution and Technology

Non-academic essays and talks will be considered for publication in the on-line magazine Transhumanity

Session abstracts and information about the presenters also will be included on the site. 

 

Call for Videos and Performances

The conference will also have a space for viewing videos, both documentary and non-documentary format, and performances that explore the themes of the conference. Please submit proposals, including videos or DVDs to James Hughes Ph.D., Trinity College, 71 Vernon St., Hartford CT 06106, james.hughes@trincoll.edu.

 

 

Formatting of Papers

Papers submitted for presentation at the conference may be formatted as the author sees fit. However, if the paper is selected for inclusion in the special issue of the CQHE then they will need to be formatted according to CQHE guidelines described here

 

Taping of the Proceedings

Conference panels and presentations will be audiotaped, and in some cases videotaped, and made available on the web.
